Margaret Stroebe and Henk Schut of Utrecht University in the Netherlands developed the Dual Process Model (DPM) of coping with bereavement (1999.) It is not a prescription for how to grieve but rather an observation of how we adapt to loss. The DPM illustrates that a healthy adaptation to grief involves moving back and forth between loss-oriented coping and restoration-oriented coping.
